the skin barrier
Share
think of your skin barrier as your skin's little protective wall.
it is constantly helping your skin hold onto moisture while protecting it from things in the environment. when that barrier is happy, your skin usually feels comfortable, soft, and balanced.
when it's struggling, you may notice tightness, dryness, redness, flaking, sensitivity, or products suddenly starting to sting.
and sometimes we accidentally make things harder on our skin.
too much cleansing.
too much exfoliation.
too many active ingredients.
constantly switching products.
scrubbing too aggressively.
your skin doesn't need to be attacked into being healthy. sometimes it needs that support.
gentle cleansing, moisturizing, nourishing ingredients, and daily sun protection can all be part of keeping your routine comfortable and balanced.
if your skin suddenly feels like everything is irritating it, don't immediately add another product to fix it.
pause.
simplify.
give your skin some room to recover.
sometimes the best skincare decision is doing less, and not just with the facial care. your mental, physical, and all beings play a good part in your skincare.
"why doesn't mine look like that?"
"why do they have no acne?"
"why is their skin so smooth?"
"why didn't this product work for me like it worked for them?"
but here's the thing...
their skin is not your skin.
genetics matter
your skin is influenced by things you can't simply buy in a bottle.
genetics play a role in things like oil production, pigmentation, how your skin ages, and how easily you may develop certain concerns.
that doesn't mean skincare doesn't matter. it means skincare isn't magic.
you can take amazing care of your skin and still have pores. you can have a great routine and still get a breakout.you can use sunscreen consistently and still have some pigmentation.
that's normal. trust me, i know it.
different skin needs different things
even two people with the same general skin type can have completely different concerns.
one person with oily skin might mostly be concerned with clogged pores.
another might be more concerned with dark marks.
another might have oily but sensitive skin.
another might be dehydrated.
so copying somebody else's entire routine doesn't always make sense. take the information.
leave what doesn't apply to you.
stop treating somebody else's results like a deadline
this is especially important when it comes to things like dark spots, texture, and acne.
skin takes time.
a product can be working even if you don't wake up the next morning looking completely different. and if a product doesn't work for you, that doesn't mean you failed.
it might simply not be the right product for your skin.
your skin deserves patience
i know patience isn't always what we want to hear. we want the spot gone now. we want the texture gone now. we want the glow now. i mean immediately!
but healthy skincare is usually more about consistency than instant transformation.
take care of your skin.
protect it.
learn it.
give it time.
and try not to make yourself feel bad for having human skin.
